The Echo is an awesome car that people hate on for no reason :o)
I mean yeah, a sunroof would’ve been nice, and they should’ve sold the hatchback down here (they did sell it in Canada tho)

Agree to agree. We have a 2001 with 355k miles on it. Other than the A/C compressor having crapped out a long time ago, it has been a great car. Relatively easy to work on, parts aren’t terribly expensive, and we’ve gotten that many miles out of it with just basic maintenance.
Is it a ‘fun’ car to drive? No, certainly not. Would I like it better with a 5 speed? Absolutely. But for basic, A-to-B transportation with little to no fuss and surprisingly more room inside than you’d think, it has been a very good car for us. And for the cheapest car Toyota sold at the time, it actually has a decent stereo. We like ours so much that my daughter is shopping for her first car , and is probably going to buy an Echo.
I have only one real gripe with them (other than the weak A/C compressors): because they are so light, they hydroplane very easily .

No tach is not awesome. Otherwise yeah I love these things even in Sedan or hatchback. Very third world shit car. Kinda reminds me of the Tsuru

They did offer a tach in the later years, but I agree, no tach sux

I don’t think so, as I’ve seen Canadian models of the sporty RS hatch we didn’t get with a tach.
The tach, and probably the power windows too, most likely became available at the time Canada started getting the
Echo hatch. Coinciding with a refresh/facelift is the best time to make other small changes too

Very interesting, I think you’re right about the refresh

That’s the best thing an Echo bumper has ever been used for.
